Shooting range deal formalized

Selectmen Monday unanimously approved an agreement between attorneys for the town and the Ridder family, formalizing an arrangement that had allowed the town to use Ridder property for a shooting range, while indemnifying the family against any problems that might arise from the police using the property. Police Chief John Cowan estimated that the town has been using the site at 100 Industrial Drive for more than 20 years. “I believe this language is good for both parties,” said Cowan. He said some departments spend thousands of dollars each time they rent time at a firing range, plus travel time if they have to go out of town. Janelle Rotondi said the previous arrangement between her family and the town was a “handshake agreement,” and if a mishap had happened, her family could have been held responsible.
