Town Meeting still short

Even after a number of successful write-in campaigns and new members elected at precinct caucuses, Stoughton Town Meeting will enter its first session Monday night at 7:30 at the Stoughton High auditorium at less than full strength. Town Clerk Cheryl Mooney posted the full list of Town Meeting representatives after the April 30 town election and the precinct caucuses on May 2 and 6. There are now 155 members, 13 fewer than the 168 seats authorized by the town charter. Mooney said she was still waiting to hear from two members who won election as write-in candidates — Matthew Smith from Precinct 5 and Faith Weiner from Precinct 6 — to officially accept their seats. If they do not, there would be 15 vacancies. Only 24 candidates originally came forward for the 62 seats available this spring, but 19 members were elected at precinct caucuses and there were six successful write-in candidacies. Additional Town Meeting sessions, if needed, will be held on May 22 and 29, and June 12, 17, 19, 24, 26, and 27.
