The students of Sharon United Synagogue Youth, one of the largest such chapters in New England, won 13 awards at the New England Region USY spring convention in Milford. The Sharon chapter received citations May 12 for excellence in categories such as membership programming, Israel advocacy, communication, and synagogue involvement, plus two special awards — the Gold Chapter of Excellence Award and the Sam Somers Memorial Award for Excellence in Social Action and Community Service Programming, according to Stacy Weinberg, youth director at Temple Israel in Sharon, where the club is the youth group. The group’s community service projects this year included a weeklong Habitat for Humanity trip to Birmingham, Ala., and making about 300 goody bags for Birthday Wishes, an organization that provides birthday parties for homeless children.
