Tie vote on wind turbine

Stop & Shop’s plan to erect an 850-kilowatt wind turbine behind its supermarket on Samoset Street was reviewed by the Planning Board on Monday and led to a tied vote. According to the board’s staff, Stop & Shop wants to install a Gamesa-brand turbine that measures approximately 275 feet from the ground to the tip of the blade, and the company estimates that it could generate enough power to offset 70 percent of that store’s energy consumption. The tied vote means that the Planning Board will take no action and won’t make a recommendation on the wind turbine proposal. The proposal is scheduled to come before the Zoning Board of Appeals on Wednesday.
