July Fourth committee seeks donations

As preparations gear up for the annual Fourth of July festivities, organizers are calling for donations to help cover the cost. Assistant General Manager Bernie Cooper said the town will chip in about 40 percent of the $50,000 budget, but that still leaves $30,000 to be raised. About half of that money has been collected so far, he said. The festivities begin next Sunday at 7 p.m., with the Sharon Concert Band performing patriotic songs and show tunes on the common. Activities on July 4 kick off with a children’s bicycle, tricycle, doll carriage and historical character parade at 1 p.m. The Colonial Boys will lead hundreds of children from the First Congregational Church at the corner of Walpole and Winter streets to the Town Common. The fee is $1 and children receive a T-shirt and ribbon. Winners are invited to ride on a float in the main parade. Margaret Angelini of Wellesley College and Lee Leach of Norwood will perform an Independence Day carillon concert from the Town Hall Memorial Tower at 3 p.m. A tour of the 50-bell Tilton Memorial Carillon will follow the one-hour concert. At 5 p.m., the Norwood Firecracker 5K Road Race will be held. Applications are available at Town Hall, the Civic Center, and the library. At 5:30 p.m. the Eastern Massachusetts Fire Truck Procession, Antique and Classic Cars and Historic Military Reenactment takes place, just prior to the parade which steps off at 5:45 p.m. Checks made payable to Norwood Fourth of July Committee may be sent to Norwood Fourth of July Committee, P.O. Box 40, Norwood 02062.
