Cohasset

Hearing on town manager change Tuesday

A legislative committee has scheduled a hearing for Tuesday at 10 a.m. on a home-rule petition to alter the Cohasset Town Manager Act. The changes were approved by Town Meeting in the spring and needs state approval to take effect. The key change involves qualifications for town manager candidates. Currently, no one can hold the job if he or she served on an elected or appointed town committee within the previous year. The new rules would bar only selectmen, or anyone who was a selectman within 15 months, from being hired as town manager. The change is relevant because Acting Town Manager Michael Milanoski is ineligible for the permanent position under the current rule. His contract expires at the end of the year, and selectmen have begun searching for a permanent town manager. The hearing will be at the State House before the Joint Committee on Municipalities and Regional Government.
