Surveillance cameras set for new school year

Officials expect to have security cameras up and running at Walpole High School in time for the 2013-14 school year, according to Superintendent Lincoln Lynch. At its June meeting, the School Committee approved a policy for using the cameras, giving Lynch responsibility for locating and overseeing them. The cameras will be used to “ensure the health, welfare, and safety of all students, staff, and visitors, to deter theft, vandalism and other negative behavior, to safeguard district buildings, grounds, and equipment and to monitor unauthorized individuals in or on school property.” The spring Town Meeting approved spending $243,000 on cameras at Walpole High School and other municipal buildings, despite a protest campaign by high school students concerned about privacy.
