Athletic Department has new leadership

Abington High School sports teams will begin the school year with new leadership, as Peter Serino takes over as athletic director and Kate Casey as associate athletic director. “They each have great experiences and strengths in athletics as players and coaches at a wide variety of levels,” said Superintendent Peter Schafer. “I am confident they will maintain and continue to develop a high school sports program of which I am so proud.” Serino and Casey, who both took the reins July 1, will continue their teaching responsibilities, while also earning stipends of $5,796 and $2,834, respectively, for their new roles. Serino, 27, who will coach junior varsity boys basketball, said he does not plan any major changes to the program, but will work to boost communications, such as maintaining a Twitter account he set up in the spring, and will try to help the student athletes succeed on and off the field. Serino, now of Whitman, is a 2004 graduate of Abington High School. Casey, 29, a 2002 Abington High graduate who teaches health at the elementary and middle school levels, will be coaching the girls varsity soccer and lacrosse teams.
