Selectmen voted to support the renaming of the Town Hall in memory of Seaman Herbert L. Foss, Hingham’s only recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor. According to Hingham selectmen chairman Bruce Rabuffo, Foss was commended for his role in the Spanish- American War and died in 1937. Hingham resident Jim Claypoole last year approached town officials about the oversight, and a group was assigned to come up with locations to be named after him. Though selectmen accepted the renaming, officials still have to determine how the dedication will read. The Hingham Historic District Commission also has to vote on the change before it goes to Town Meeting for final approval. “Here is a guy who won his medal for action in the Spanish-American war, and it’s just a wonderful tribute that we finally gotten around to,” Rabuffo said.
