5k road race: The Mary E. Flaherty School will host the 10th Annual 5k Fun Run/Walk next Sunday, Sept. 15. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. at Braintree High School and the race begins at 9 a.m. There will also be kids’ races, face painting, raffles, music, and more. There is a $20 pre-registration fee, $25 same day. or 781-848-0441.


Ride for Food: The second annual Three Square New England Ride for Food will take place next Sunday, Sept. 15. Sponsored by Ripples of Hope, the 50-mile ride will begin at 8 a.m., the 25-mile ride at 9:30 a.m., and the 12-mile ride at 10:15 a.m. All rides start at the Noble & Greenough School. Riders must register a half-hour before the start of each ride. Riders 14 years or older are invited to participate. Registration fee is $75.



Cook-off: The North Community Church will hold its fifth annual rib cook-off on Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Ten teams will compete for a first-place trophy. There will be face painting, a jumpy house, a bake sale, and entertainment by Jim Sylvia. Tickets are $25 for adults, $7 for children under 12 years. All proceeds benefit the church’s adult and youth missions. or 781-837-3784.


Gallery opening: Scituate resident Michael Coyne is the featured artist at the James Library & Center for the Arts Gallery for the month of September. The show of his oil paintings opens on Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. with a free reception. The show remains on view through Sept. 28. or 781-659-7100.

Charity show: The fifth annual Cars and ’Copters show will return to the Plymouth Municipal Airport next Sunday, Sept. 15 at 9 a.m. There will be drawings, a golf ball drop, food, drink, music, and vendor displays. There is a $10 per car donation and all net proceeds will go to The Jimmy Fund. Rain date scheduled for Sept. 22.


Music performance: The River Club Music Hall will host a performance by Tom Rush next Sunday, Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m. John Batdorf, formerly of Batdorf and Rodney, will be the opening act. Tickets are $40.
