New contract for teachers

The School Committee and Weymouth Teachers’ Association have a new contract that runs through August 31, 2015. The contract, which covers 533 teachers and school nurses and is retroactive to September 2012, will cost the district about $1.79 million, according to Superintendent Kenneth Salim. “We are pleased to have reached an agreement with the teachers’ union,” he said. Under the agreement, union members received a one percent pay hike for a portion of the 2012-2013 school year, a retroactive two percent hike effective Sept. 1, and will get another two percent increase on Sept. 1, 2014. The contract also establishes a committee to review teachers’ hours and the length of their work year.
