Rizzi’s contract extended

The School Committee voted 4-1 Tuesday night to extend the contract of Superintendent of Schools Marguerite Rizzi through the 2016-17 school year. Erdem Ural, who has clashed often with fellow committee members and Rizzi in the past, opposed the extension, asking why it was necessary. Committee chairwoman Joyce Hussein said the decision to grant Rizzi’s request for an additional year came after a recent state review of the school district cited several administrative strengths. “Under Dr. Rizzi’s direction, the alignment of the curriculum to the [state] Common Core is complete at a time when many school districts are struggling to commit resources and man power to this task,” said Husseini. Rizzi was hired in 2009 with a three-year contract, and in September 2010, the School Committee extended it for four additional four years.
