The Board of Selectmen is nearing its appointment of a new town counsel and an associate town counsel. Joseph R. Pacheco, the board chairman, said the town received 14 applications for the town counsel position that was vacated recently with the retirement of longtime counsel Marc Antine, and four for the newly created associate counsel position. Pacheco and Town Administrator Randall Buckner are interviewing candidates, and Pacheco said he hoped to bring recommendations on the appointments to his full board by the end of the month. Pacheco said selectmen decided to add the associate counsel position so the town would not have to hire an outside lawyer when the regular counsel is not available. He said the associate counsel could be well prepared to become the regular counsel in the future. As did Antine, both the regular and associate counsels will serve as vendors, rather than town employees, appointed on an annual basis.
