Nov. 1 deadline for senior tax program

Residents age 60 and over have until Nov. 1 to submit applications for the Senior Tax Work Off Program, which enables senior citizens to “work off” a portion of their taxes by volunteering during the year. The maximum amount of an abatement of taxes is $750, town officials said. And only one senior work-off abatement is allowed per household for those 60 and older as of Jan. 1. Background checks are carried out before any applicant is placed in a volunteer position, which range from clerical, computer, and kitchen and serving work to reception, accounting, building and grounds maintenance, and data base management.
