GlobeSouth: Swimmers to watch at state meet

The Division 1 and 2 fall swimming and diving state championships will be held Sunday at Harvard’s Blodgett Pool. These five local competitors will be contending for titles.

Virginia Burns, Brockton: The senior is the favorite to win both of her races, the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. She holds the meet record for the 100 free and is eyeing a personal best in the 50 fly in her final high school meet.

Abby Lake, Ursuline: A little under two seconds was all that separated the junior from Brockton’s Burns in the 100 fly at the South Sectional last Sunday. She did win the 100 backstroke and is a good bet to repeat.

Sarah Murphy, Braintree: The sophomore will be competing in the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle. The IM is a change of pace; she competed only in freestyle events at the South Sectional.

Hannah Phelan, Walpole: She finished third in the 1-meter dive at the South Sectional, but with Framingham divers Maura Sticco-Ivins and Alyssa Seales now competing in the Division 1 meet at Harvard, the sophomore has a clear path to the crown.

Gabriella Taghian, Westwood: The junior diver placed fourth in the 1-meter at MIT and is seeded second behind Walpole’s Phelan in Division 2. The two are separated in the rankings by just 48.9 points.
