The Planning Board could vote as early as Monday to submit an article to the April 28 Town Meeting that would establish mixed-use zoning in the center of the Brant Rock area, town planner Paul Halkiotis said in an interview. The goal is to allow apartments and condominiums over commercial buildings, making new construction or renovation more financially viable for property owners and drawing residents to the commercial district, he said. Flooding has damaged the coastal neighborhood repeatedly, adding to the challenges for businesses owners, he said. The Planning Department started working on an article after two business owners who were planning to build expressed a desire for second-floor housing. One plan, for construction between Arthur and Pat’s and The Latest Scoop, called for a raised boardwalk in front, prompting the Planning Board to consider requiring such a feature for new construction in the proposed zoning overlay district, he said.
