New council president promises progress on drug problem

New Town Council president Patrick O’Connor said two of his top priorities are addressing the town’s mental-health and substance-abuse problems and the need for long-range planning in Weymouth. He said he would create two committees to tackle the issues. “Far too many of our residents suffer in silence with mental illness and far too many are losing their battle with substance abuse,” O’Connor said after his unanimous election at the Jan. 6 council meeting, which was televised online. O’Connor, who was first elected when he was 21, has been on the council eight years. Councilor Michael Smart was elected vice chairman.
