Avon

Taking stock of local seniors’ health

Senior citizens in town have lower rates of Alzheimer’s disease and osteoporosis compared with state averages, according to a recently released report. The Massachusetts Healthy Aging Collaborative’s annual study, which examined about 100 health measurements in each community in the state, also found that Avon’s 645 seniors reported fewer nursing home stays than the state average and are more likely to eat recommended levels of fruits and vegetables. On the down side, the report found that Avon seniors have higher rates of diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, congestive heart failure, and hospital readmissions than their contemporaries statewide. The organization’s data report is available at www.mahealthyagingcollaborative.org.
