Mega Yard Sale in Plymouth aims to fight cancer

The giant yard sale this Sunday in Plymouth will be the prelude to a major fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society.

The Mega Yard Sale, sponsored by the Relay for Life of Greater Plymouth, will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Walgreen’s parking lot on Samoset Street in Plymouth.

More than three dozen teams are expected to participate in this year’s Relay for Life, and each will set up a table and sell items such as books, CDs, DVDs, small appliances, games, crafts, and baked goods. Proceeds from the benefit will go to the teams’ fund-raising efforts, which will then be donated to the American Cancer Society.

In the Relay for Life, scheduled for June 21 and 22 at Plymouth South High School, people form teams and sign up pledges to raise money. The teams will walk around a track, with participants and cancer survivors taking the journey together.

“We have some great teams and great people involved in this and they wholeheartedly put themselves into raising money for this cause,” said David Kindy, volunteer and former cochairman of the Relay for Life of Greater Plymouth.

“Just about everyone knows someone who has or had cancer and it brings out some significant feelings for people. They want to go out to try to eliminate the disease, and this sale is just one way for them to help support programs that try to do that.”

This Sunday's Mega Yard Sale will be held rain or shine. Another Mega Yard Sale is scheduled for June 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
