School hires police officer

The private, all-girls Notre Dame Academy in Hingham agreed this month to create a full-time school resource officer position, and will hire Hingham Police Officer Joel Salituri in a three-year public-private contract. Salituri will teach classes on criminal justice, Internet safety, and self-defense classes. Salituri’s salary will be funded by the school, and the Police Department will fill his position once he leaves, according to a statement from the town. The public-private partnership, which was proposed months ago, is rare for the area but will prove beneficial to the school and the town, police officials said in an e-mail. Notre Dame Academy principal Kathleen M. Colin said the newly created position was “not in response to any incidents,” noting instead that it was important for education and safety in the school.
