A group of 31 students from the Plymouth public schools recently played the role of musical ambassadors when they traveled to Plymouth, England to perform in a concert. The fifth- through seventh-grade students are participants in the Plymouth International Chorus, a music education program for children in Plymouth and their counterparts in England. The groups performed in the historic Plymouth Guildhall in a concert attended by some 500 people, including the lord mayor of the Plymouth City Council. About 220 students, aged 10 to 17, were in the English contingent. The American participation in the program is organized by Plymouth 400, the group planning the 400th anniversary events in 2020 commemorating the Mayflower voyage and the founding of Plymouth Colony. The British participation is being coordinated by Mayflower 400, the group planning the Mayflower anniversary events in the United Kingdom. The US and English Plymouths, on an alternating basis, will host a student concert each year under the program, which is intended to highlight the deep connections between the two nations. While on their recent visit, the Massachusetts students had a chance to learn about the city’s history by touring its landmarks. They also worked with their counterparts on a collaborative project at the Plymouth School of Creative Arts.
