Youngsters in the Brockton Junior Boxers Pop Warner Football League will be a little safer this season with their heads protected by the latest in concussion protective helmets.
The league distributed the Xenith helmets this month to all the 5- to 14-year-olds participating in the program.
The helmets are designed to minimize sudden movements of the head and reduce the potential for concussions.
There has been growing concern about the long-term health effects of repeated concussions. On its website, the league said that “safety is our number one priority” and the organization “strives on providing city kids a safe environment to keep them on the right path to be successful on and off the field.”
The league, which started in 2005 after a long hiatus in the city, is fund-raising to pay for the helmets. The first game is scheduled for Sept. 4.Johanna Seltz can be reached at email@example.com.
