A study of the Norwood middle and elementary schools recommends that a new and larger Coakley Middle School be built that would also house grade five, taking those students from the elementary schools.
The proposal, based in part on an analysis by Ai3 architects for the Long Range Study Committee, is now before the School Committee.
Proponents of the idea say it would address the needs of the middle school and also relieve overcrowding at the elementary schools.
A proposed timeline calls for the School Committee to decide on a plan and submit a statement of interest to the Massachusetts School Building Authority by early next year for possible groundbreaking in 2022 and completion in 2025.
The current school would remain open until the new building was finished.
Other possibilities include consolidating some or all of the elementary schools, which the study -- posted on the school district’s website -- says does not need to happen until after construction of the middle school.Jean Lang can be reached at email@example.com.
