Town mulls ban on sale of recreational marijuana

The town of Sharon is considering a temporary moratorium on the sale of recreational marijuana, and officials are looking for public input.

The sale of recreational marijuana raises “novel legal, planning, and public safety issues,” and the town needs time to address them, a notice of the public hearing states.

The Planning Board will hold the hearing at 7:45 p.m. Sept. 28 in the Sharon Community Center, 219 Massapoag Ave., to review a special Town Meeting article calling for changes to the town’s zoning bylaws and a temporary moratorium on the sale of recreational marijuana.

The special Town Meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 in the auditorium of Sharon High School, 181 Pond St.

Since Massachusetts voters approved a measure to allow the sale of recreational marijuana in 2016, several communities have proposed or enacted moratoriums on the practice, including Wayland, Malden, Dedham, and Westwood.
