Riddle’s could open under new owner by Thanksgiving

Officials in Hull have confirmed that the owners of the Village Market in Scituate are buying Riddle’s Supermart on Nantasket Avenue, bringing a full-service grocery back to the town.

“I think it’s going to be a great replacement,” said Town Manager Philip Lemnios. “They have a great reputation and will offer a full array of products.”

The Village Market has been in Scituate Harbor for 16 years, and the family-owned business has operated a similar store in Roslindale for the past 20 years.

Riddle’s stopped stocking its shelves earlier this year and went on the market for $7.25 million in June, depressing business throughout the Kenberma commercial district. There has been a grocery store at the site since 1970, and Riddle’s was the only full-service grocery in town.

The realtor handling the transaction would not disclose the sale price, but has said he expected the new business could reopen in time for Thanksgiving.
