Two Mansfield firefighters were awarded medals of valor by Governor Charlie Baker in a state awards ceremony Nov. 21 for pulling a woman from a blazing fire in an East Street condominium last March.
Twenty-year department veteran Captain John Terry and Justin Sliney, a firefighter/paramedic and son of a former Mansfield fire chief, were able to find and carry the woman out of her burning building through the smoke and heat, according to Mansfield Fire Chief Neal Boldrighini, who was also on the scene.
“We had very quick word that there might be a victim inside,” he said. “They did a phenomenal job. We practice and train for these things all the time.”
Boldrighini said that although the woman died several days later, she was able to say goodbye to her family members.
Terry and Sliney and the rest of the seven-member crew that fought the fire will be honored in a local ceremony this winter, he email@example.com
