School to host debate tourney

Almost 800 high school students have signed up for the “Big Lex’’ debate tournament at Lexington High School next weekend. The Lexington Winter Invitational is one of the largest school-run tournaments in the country, and is attracting students from more than 90 schools and 16 states this year, said Janet McMahan, the event’s cochairwoman. The public competition will run from Friday through Jan. 16. Teams will compete in several categories, including public forum and policy. Students on Lexington High’s debate team will run the tournament, and will not be competing. The team raises money by hosting the event each year. - Brock Parker
