Red Cross lifeguard training

The American Red Cross is offering a lifeguard training and certification course starting Wednesday at the Milford High School swimming pool. The course is open to anyone over 15 years old who can pass a swimming test, which will be administered during the first class, said Len Morcone, director of the Milford Community School Use Program. Participants must be able to swim 300 yards, with at least 100 yards in the front crawl or breast stroke; plus be able to swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10-pound brick from the bottom of the pool, and swim back within 1 minute 40 seconds. The 11-week course runs Wednesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., and covers CPR, first aid, and the lifeguard skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The certification class costs $275; recertification is $150. Registration closes tomorrow. For more information, call 508-478-1119. - Jose Martinez
