An anticipated increase in state aid for schools, which will start to address Brookline’s enrollment surge, and increases in revenue beyond the property tax will mean less budget pain this year than the town has faced since 2008, according to Town Administrator Mel Kleckner’s budget message. Efficiencies include eliminating positions in the planning and public works departments - following two studies of their operations. The budget anticipates changes to parking meter technologies - meaning some expenditures on hand-held computers, reprogramming, and some new meters - continuing enrollment pressures on the schools, and putting aside funds for post-retirement health costs and other reserves. This budget also sees the payment for the land under new condominiums on Fisher Hill and the construction of the park on the old state reservoir land across the street. - Andreae Downs
