Liquor license changes

Wellesley residents voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to reduce the number of seats required for a restaurant to obtain a liquor license, a measure aimed at boosting small businesses. The measure passed with 2,749 voting in favor and 457 people against. The ballot question gives the Board of Selectmen the authority to grant liquor licenses to restaurants with 50 to 99 seats. The old regulations did not allow liquor licenses to restaurants with fewer than 100 seats. Town Clerk Kathleen Nagle said that passage of the ballot question also allows selectmen to grant six additional beer and wine licenses. Currently, the only licenses available are for all alcohol. Hans Larsen, Wellesley’s executive director, said that now the Board of Selectmen needs to amend the town’s alcohol regulations. The new regulations, he said, will be discussed at the board’s meeting on March 20. - Evan Allen
