Communities looking for quicker path to build trails

Nonprofit draws interest in swap for scrap metal

Newton, Needham, Dover and Medfield are four communities looking at a new approach to building rail trails - one that could see a path done quickly and without relying on limited state or federal dollars. As the communities each look to create trails along unused rail beds owned by the MBTA, all are exploring a partnership with a non-profit group called Iron Horse Preservation Society Inc. The Nevada-based group pulls up the old track, sells the iron and uses the proceeds to pay for the work and a basic walking path.
