As T sets plan, commuters along for ride

Most say higher fares better than service cuts

The MBTA last week voted on steep rate hikes that will push the cost of monthly commuter rail passes up between 20 and 30 percent for riders taking the train from the western suburbs into Boston from Zone 1 in Newton to the furthest Zone 8 in Fitchburg. The price increases will take effect on July 1 and are being done to close a budget deficit of up to $185 million projected for the coming fiscal year. And while many commuters from Needham to Franklin this week said they are unhappy about the fare hikes, they are relieved the cuts didn’t include more service cuts and most intend to continue taking the train
