Town Meeting votes delayed

The most controversial warrant article at last week’s annual Town Meeting – a proposal to switch the town government from a three-member Board of Selectmen to a five-member board, and institute a new more powerful town manager position – was put on hold. Residents moved to indefinitely postpone the proposal, with 112 voting for postponement and 101 against. Many who spoke out supported the notion of a larger Board of Selectmen but not the town manager position. Shortly before Town Meeting, Leo Barolini, one of the Drafting Committee members responsible for creating the proposal, filed a minority report requesting that the article be split into two separate articles – one to vote on the selectmen increase, and one to vote on the town manager position – but ultimately the original warrant article was left unchanged. As a result of the vote, the Drafting Committee created at last year’s Town Meeting has disbanded. - Jennifer Roach
