Fund-raiser honors Luke’s legacy

In honor of Luke Voss-Kernan, a Newton teenager killed in May in an accident while on a dream road trip with friends, his family has started a fund-raiser called Luke's Lights. The goal is to send more than 1,000 solar lights to off-the-grid homes, schools, and orphanages in Kenya so that children can live, play, and do their homework with lights instead of kerosene lamps. Luke's motto was “Dream big. Do bigger.” His family and friends knew him as a bright spirit who saw the good in the world, and as a dedicated volunteer who visited villages in Kenya and helped build a school with the nonprofit Free the Children. Each light purchased from the nonprofit Unite-to-Light costs $10. The lights are being taken to Kenya in batches by volunteer groups working for Free the Children, a charity dedicated to freeing children and families from poverty by building schools in their communities. To make a tax-deductible donation, mail a check made out to Unite-to-Light to M. Alexander, 62 Elmore St., Newton, MA 02459, or go online to www.unite-to-light.org and click on the Luke's Lights link.
