The city has hired Robert Barrett as its first chief information officer, with his mission to oversee technology in all municipal departments. Barrett, who was previously the chief information officer for a Waltham-based battery maker, A123 Systems Inc., will start his new job Monday. He will coordinate the city’s efforts in using technology to deliver better services to residents and ensure that all departments are working cohesively, said Maureen Lemieux, Newton’s chief financial officer. Barrett said in an announcement on his hiring that the city’s challenge is to develop “consistent standards, resources, and processes in order to build a reliable and cost-effective IT infrastructure to support the rapidly growing demands.” His salary will be $119,200, Lemieux said.
