New vegetable garden at Whittemore school

Students at Whittemore Elementary School now have an outdoor garden thanks to Healthy Waltham and interns from Brandeis University. The new garden, which will serve as an outdoor classroom, was outfitted with compost and planted with beans, cherry tomatoes, and herbs by volunteers and students. Students will learn about soil structure and plant life cycles, and will help tend the garden, which was set up on the south side of the school to maximize its exposure to the sun. Whittemore's garden was funded by a grant to Healthy Waltham from the Whole Kids Foundation, a charitable project by Whole Foods Market, and is the fourth school garden in the city. Stanley Elementary School, Northeast Elementary, and McDevitt Middle School also have gardens.
