The Parks and Recreation Department will field six football teams in the American Youth Football program starting in August, with room for more players in grades 2 through 8 to join the 128 already registered. Practices will start Aug. 6 at the new Fruit Street field complex, with space and team placement based on grade. The program is the largest youth football organization in the country, and is a partner of the National Football League, according to an announcement by the town department. American Youth Football provides support services, academic scholarships, grants, and Giving Back programs, and holds tournaments for more than 500,000 youth players, the announcement stated.
