Zoning board to tour housing site

The Zoning Board of Appeals is scheduled to visit the site of a proposed affordable-housing development on industrial land between Route 27 and West Street at 1 p.m. Monday. Gatehouse Group LLC of Mansfield purchased the land in October for $1.65 million, and has proposed building a 96-unit apartment project called the Parc at Medfield on the property. Board members will meet at West Street, south of the Potpourri Building, with the consulting engineer to look at drainage and other issues. Representatives of the Gatehouse Group will also be on hand, according to the board. The developer needs to obtain a variance for its housing proposal because the land is zoned for industrial use. Although the Gatehouse Group says the 9.22-acre parcel is underutilized property that is well-suited for multifamily housing, critics say the project would add traffic and put a strain on the town’s schools, water system, and emergency services. If the board gives its approval for the zoning variance, the Parc at Medfield would be built in two phases; plans call for two buildings, each containing 12 one-bedroom units, 24 two-bedrooms, and 12 three-bedroom apartments. The proposed monthly rents range from $625 to $1,050.
