Runkle opening delayed until Oct. 11

The renovated and expanded Runkle School will not be open in time for the scheduled first day of classes on Sept. 6. The original plan was to have the work finished by Aug. 15 , said project manager Tony Guigli, but finish work — including painting, flooring, and cabinetry — as well as plantings, walkways, and play equipment will still be in progress. The mechanical systems, primarily the heat and air conditioning, still needed to be fully checked to make sure they would work properly, Guigli said. Superintendent Bill Lupini said Runkle students will begin the school year in the Old Lincoln School, where classes will continue until Oct. 4. From Oct. 5 to 10, a span that includes the Columbus Day holiday, students will have time off while classroom materials are shifted back into the renovated Runkle School, Lupini said, with its revised opening day set for Oct. 11. The plan would add three days onto the conclusion of the school year for Runkle School students, depending on the number of snow days the school district uses for the year.
