Mall at Chestnut Hill seeks to add three more restaurants

The owner of the Mall at Chestnut Hill on Route 9 has applied for approval from the city of Newton to add three more restaurants in the next three years.

Simon Property Group, which owns the mall, wants to add nearly 800 additional restaurant seats and outdoor dining areas for seasonal use, according to city planning documents.

Lisa Bell, a spokeswoman for Simon, wrote in an e-mail: “Simon Property Group would indeed like to add some great restaurants to the dining mix at The Mall at Chestnut Hill. The proposed site for these new dining options is at the front of the mall along Route 9.”

Simon wants to add 23,300 square feet of restaurant space, by converting existing retail space and bumping out the southern face of the mall.

The Mall at Chestnut Hill has in recent years become a home for many of the retailers that once occupied the nearby Atrium Mall.

Simon, which had owned the Atrium Mall, sold it earlier this year to a Needham-based real estate investment firm that is converting it into a medical and office center.
