Estabrook earns gold for wellness

State officials have awarded Estabrook Elementary School the only “gold level’’ honor in this year’s Massachusetts School Wellness Awards program. Representatives from the school received a banner signifying the accomplishment on Nov. 7. The awards program, a collaboration by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Department of Public Health in its third year, recognizes schools that promote healthy eating, physical activity, and tobacco-free lifestyles for students and staff, according to the state’s Executive Office of Health and Human Services. The state agencies highlighted the “Run of the Mill 5K” and “Jim Banks Kids Fun Run,” hosted by the Estabrook community each May, as well as weekly walks or runs that many teachers take together. Two other Lexington schools have previously won gold awards in the program, with Bridge Elementary taking the top level last year and Hastings Elementary in 2010.
