Lexpress to test free rides for seniors

The town’s Lexpress minibus system will begin offering free rides to senior citizens during some morning and mid-day hours next month. The free rides are part of a six-month pilot program beginning Jan. 1 that aims to attract more passengers during off-peak hours, according to Jeanette Rebecchi, the town’s transportation services coordinator. During the trial period, Lexpress will offer free rides to residents ages 65 and older, people with special needs, and Medicare recipients between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on weekdays. The fixed-route service’s fare for seniors and special-needs riders normally is 75 cents. The offer is expected to generate an additional 1,500 rides during the pilot program, which is also being conducted to encourage travel by low-income seniors and special-needs residents who stay home because of the service’s cost.
