Progress on bid for larger board

The state Legislature's Joint Committee on Election Laws recently approved an amended bill that moves Sudbury a step closer to expanding its Board of Selectmen from three members to five, by requiring another vote on the issue by residents. State Representative Tom Conroy said the revised bill requires the proposed change to be on the town’s annual election ballot in March. If the measure wins a majority vote next spring, an election for the two additional selectmen’s positions would have to be held no later than the annual election in March 2014, but a special election could be called sooner by selectmen or a citizens petition, the bill states. The bill was being considered by the House last week, and would require the Senate’s approval and the governor’s signature to take effect. The expansion plan was approved by Special Town Meeting this fall and sent to the Legislature as a home-rule petition.
