Voters OK tax shift to aid seniors

Residents recently passed a plan that proponents say will reduce the tax burden on a small number of seniors struggling to stay in their homes. The plan, which was approved by a vote of 1,257 to 535 in the Dec. 4 special election, calls for increasing the tax burden on all residential taxpayers by 0.5 percent and using the proceeds to reduce the taxes of about 250 low- to moderate-income seniors who pay more than 10 percent of their income on property taxes. The shift, which will take effect July 1, is expected to cost the town’s average taxpayer about $55 a year, while saving a low-income senior as much as $6,000, officials said.
