Council reappoints acting police chief

City councilors recently voted unanimously to reappoint Keith MacPherson as the Police Department’s acting chief, a role he has filled in the aftermath of Thomas LaCroix’s arrest in June. The council’s Dec. 10 vote extends MacPherson’s appointment by the mayor for another six months. President Robert Waddick said his fellow councilors are familiar with MacPherson, who was a deputy chief in the department before being appointed as acting chief. Maynard police arrested LaCroix, who was Waltham’s police chief at the time, for allegedly assaulting his wife and a female neighbor during two incidents. He was placed on administrative leave with pay, and is still collecting checks, Waltham Mayor Jeannette McCarthy said earlier this month. LaCroix is scheduled for a court hearing on Jan. 4, with his trial scheduled to begin on Feb. 13, said representatives of the Middlesex district attorney’s office. LaCroix is charged with two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, after allegedly striking the women with a bicycle rack and a counter top. He is also charged with two counts of assault and battery, one count of assault, and one count of intimidating a witness, officials said.
