The town’s Senior Center is offering help to local elders who need to apply or renew their requests for heating assistance this winter, obtain a discount on their electricity bills, or sign up for a hand with small home repairs. Outreach coordinator Walter Rice can be called at 508-841-8647 for more information or to set up a consultation appointment. The heating assistance is based on income levels, with the current limits including $31,271 for an individual, and $40,893 for a household of two. Seniors receiving fuel assistance may also qualify for a Shrewsbury Electric & Cable Operations discount; applications for the program are available at the Senior Center. The outreach office can also help seniors qualify for the small home repair program, which arranges for volunteers to help with such projects as changing lightbulbs and light fixtures, installing or fixing grab bars, and replacing doorknobs. The repairs are performed at no cost, but seniors may have to pay for the materials, based on their household income.
