Church razed, to be replaced by housing

The oldest church in Belmont was demolished Monday morning, according to town officials and the developer who plans to build three duplex houses where it stood.

“It’s over. It’s pretty sad,” said Selectman Andy Rojas. “I’m sure [the developer] will build some nice houses on there, but it’s really not the same.”

Great to see a property get back on the tax rolls. Personally, I would have wanted to see a higher density residential/retail mix with four or five stories and underground parking. Churches are a dime-a-dozen and there was nothing architecturally distinctive about the Congregationalist Church. Hats off to the developer for taking a risk in today's unstable economy to provide jobs and housing to Mass citizens.

Waverly Square is an appropriate location for higher value development, especially with frequent MBTA bus service. I'd hope Mr. Hovsepian is more ambitious with his plans and builds a larger condo development that suits this ideal urban village location.
