The Local in Newton plans new restaurants in Wellesley, Wayland

The Local in Newton is coming soon to Wellesley and Wayland — and, according to owner Frank Santo,  it could be the beginning of a much larger expansion.

“We feel that every neighborhood should have a Local,” he said. “We’re looking at neighborhoods on a monthly basis.”

The pub, which opened at 1391 Washington St. in West Newton in November 2008,  offers “approachable” pub food, with a relaxed atmosphere and local ingredients, Santo said.

“It just seems like a concept that the public enjoys,” he said. “Local produce, local beer, local burgers.”

Rumors had been swirling that the Local could be opening in new locations, but the decision was announced officially last weekend. In Wellesley, the Local will take the place of the old China Sky, whose owner retired, said Santo. In Wayland, it will open in the new Town Center development.

The new locations will have slightly expanded menus, said Santo, because they will have larger kitchens. He is hoping that the Wayland location opens on June 1; Wellesley’s opening date is tentatively scheduled for next winter.

Santo said the Wellesley and Wayland sites will be the only new locations to open this year, but his company is taking calls from developers about other properties. He is looking at communities north of Boston.

“We hope to open them as long as we can execute them and keep them up to our standards,” he said. “As long as we can do that, we’ll keep opening them.”
