Take time to say ‘Howdy, neighbor’

Mayor Jeannette McCarthy and REACH Beyond Domestic Violence have declared this week as the second annual “Say Hi to Your Neighbors Week,” as part of the local nonprofit organization’s Small Actions campaign to end domestic violence. According to REACH officials, saying hello to strangers, acquaintances, and neighbors can help create a safer community, break the isolation felt by people experiencing violence, and help citizens look out for each other. The organization is encouraging residents to say a collective total of 2,013 “hellos” by Saturday. REACH has organized activities for each day to help people get to know one another, including hosting local legislators at the Dunkin’ Donuts at 859 Main St. at 1 p.m. Monday, handing out free coffee to train commuters Tuesday morning, delivering free cupcakes from In A Pickle restaurant, and an event at Shopper’s Café on Moody Street where residents can meet local news media representatives Friday at 6 p.m. For more information on the campaign and the week’s scheduled events, visit www.reachma.org.
