Academic Decathlon team wins three medals

The Academic Decathlon team of Avon Middle High School came home from the state tournament last weekend with three medals, in what coach Tricia London called “a very successful day. We are the smallest school in Massachusetts to ever qualify for states, and I was thrilled just to be at the competition, let alone win prizes.” The team finished 10th out of 15 schools competing, she said. Junior Brian Lounge and senior Sohenga Depestre won bronze, while senior Sheila Dias earned a gold medal, London said. The tournament, which focused on knowledge of Russia, was held last Sunday in Shrewsbury.
